Introducing rum, the Single & Single way: unlikely, outlandish and incredibly enjoyable. Single cask and bottled at cask strength. Those are the givens. Then there’s the allure. High end sipping rum is irresistible and captivating. It never compromises, and neither do we. The perfect match.
But what really attracts us to this rich, diverse category is the backstories. Take our first release, a Caroni 23 Year Old, uncovered in an abandoned warehouse in 2004. Hen’s teeth. Literally.
It sets the precedent. Our rums will be limited. We’ll unearth curiosities, forge new alliances and explore fresh territories. Because we’re on a great adventure. To bottle the mercurial. To spark some fun. To discover delights assured to delight.
Caroni 23 Year Old
|Region||Matured in Trinidad, finished in the UK|
|Type||Single Traditional Column|
|ABV||64% (Cask Strength)|
This mythical distillery was built in 1923 on the site of the old Caroni sugar factory in Trinidad. Equipped with column and pot stills, it supplied the British Navy with its distinctly heavy rums. After being sold by the government and eventually closing in 2002, it became the stuff of legend when Luca Gargano discovered a derelict warehouse full of Caroni barrels. He bought the lot and created a cult by releasing only a handful very occasionally.
The nose hits hard with tropical funk: ripe banana, barbequed pineapple, fresh coconut cream, overly ripe dried mango and sweet vanilla pods, before the palate is enveloped with an oily mouthfeel. Here the heavy, full-bodied flavours continue, rich, woody and layered, all clean and fragrant, before the funk winds down with a long, spicy finish accented by hints of cherry and blueberry.
Pair this dark, single source rum with the sweet smoke of a rich, full-bodied, aged Cuban cigar. We recommend the H. Upmann Magnum Connoisseur. Why a cigar? Why not?
